Letter of Transmittal

Description and Format:

A letter of transmittal is often used to introduce formal technical reports. In industry, each company has a recommended form. For ChE undergraduate reports, we are using a memo format for the “letter.”

A letter of transmittal normally begins with a paragraph clearly stating the report’s contents. It describes the purpose of the work. For a complex experiment, it describes the scope and limitations. A concluding paragraph acknowledges those who assisted the team and the level of effort (in hours) by team members.

Your instructor may request that this letter include other items, such as information concerning the distribution of report copies.
